TRADES UNION CONGRESS: 2018

As trade union newly affiliated to the TUC, the Society attended its first TUC Congress in Manchester last week. And, celebrating our 130th year in the same year as the TUC is celebrating its 150th, we were warmly welcomed as a union that has mirrored the development of the trade union movement since its inception.

Why art, craft and design matters, advocacy resources for members

NSEAD celebrates its 130th year with the publication of AD magazine and a suite of advocacy resources for NSEAD members. Additional copies of our advocacy poster, which comes free in AD, can be purchased online by (£3 members and £5 non-members). 

The 43x54cm poster, nine postcards, and the six-page advocacy resource 'Why, art, craft and design matters' published in AD, are also available for download – these are members' only resources - please log in to access them.

Ofsted's Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, publishes recent research on curriculum design and the new education inspection framework

Amanda Spielman, Chief Inspector of Schools, has published the second phase of Ofsted's research on curriculum design: HMCI commentary: curriculum and the new education inspection framework.

The research aims, states Chris Jones, Deputy Director, Research and Evaluation Ofsted, are to 'find out what a high-quality curriculum looks like.' To this end Ofsted undertook 'in-depth conversations' with curriculum leaders in 23 schools that had identified as being particularly invested in curriculum design.

Richard Quinn gives a front row seat for art and design students and arts advocacy

Richard Quinn, fashion designer and winner of the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, invited students from St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive and Central Saint Martins, to attend and to sit on the front row of the launch of his London Fashion Week collection. 

Not only did Richard offer this incredible experience to these young people, but he used this platform and his voice to raise awareness of the impact of government policies on arts provision in schools.
