In brief...

The value of our subject - changing the narrative

In 1888 a group of art school principals came together to form what is now NSEAD. Their aim, ‘To preserve the interests of Art Education, as a subject of the highest national importance’. This remains a constant part of our work – it was ever thus.

One of the most important things NSEAD does is to get behind the headlines and work with our partners to challenge the way our subject is represented. Last week the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) published a study of government spending on different university degrees, singling out the high cost of creative arts degrees. This follows other reports this year that have taken a purely transactional approach to measuring raw earnings as the only value of study. We have seen a hardening of position against the value of an arts degree.

This representation of the value of creative arts is unhelpful and based on flawed assumptions. It matters, because these assumptions influence policy that affects our subject at all ages and stages. In February NSEAD invited Gordon McKenzie, to present to The APPG for Art, Craft & Design in Education. Understanding the limitations of graduate outcome measures in Higher Education was commissioned by HEAD Trust and Guild HE. The report highlights some of the ‘blind spots’ that feed negative stories about the value of our subject. It is essential reading for anyone who is concerned at the way creative arts education is being reported.

NSEAD has a unique overview of the art & design education ‘pipeline’. Joining the dots and taking this kind of research to a wider audience is a vital part of our work. Telling the story of the true worth of art education is as important now as it was 131 years ago – the work goes on.

Sign the petition to save an Arts in Schools collection from private sale

Hertfordshire County Council have announced the sale of the majority of a collection founded by a pioneering director of education, John Newsom, which he established in 1949. The collection was one of the first of its kind intended for schools to loan, and known as 'Art for Schools'. In view of the collection's original aims and provenance, NSEAD cannot support the sale and ask that you consider signing this 'Save Hertfordshire's Public Art Collection'.

Hertfordshire County Council state that they consulted on the sale, which will take place 21 March. They also say: 'The service became less relevant to the evolving curriculum and it was suspended in 2012 and permanently discontinued in 2017'. NSEAD does not agree that the curriculum, introduced in 2010, justifies 'disposing' of the art for schools. Indeed the Society believes first-hand access to both contemporary and 21-century artworks, is as vital today as it was in 1949. The Council intends to sell 90 per cent of the artworks which include a Barbara Hepworth.
