In brief...

NSEAD Council and Forum

As we near the end of the year, one NSEAD tradition holds firm - the handover of Council and Forum positions.

We give huge thanks to our Council members who complete their three year term of office at the end of this month - Nick Beavon, Paul Carney, Katie Leonard, Tamar McClellan, Sarah Phillips and Deidre Robson.

They have all contributed so much to NSEAD through their work on Council, and we know they will continue to be active through the Special Interest Groups that are achieving so much for our members.

We also say a warm thanks to Chris Gozzard who retires after a year on Council - his contribution has been invaluable, and he continues to be a fantastic NSEAD advocate.

We had 6 vacancies to be filled for Council for 2021-24 and one extraordinary vacancy arising. Seven nominations have been received by seven eligible candidates, resident in the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland, in good standing having paid the appropriate subscription for this membership year.  I am delighted to welcome  Steven Berryman, Fiona Donnelly, Ron George, Kate Noble, Amy O’Donnell, Eve Oliver and Megan Wellington Barrett to Council.

We have two new members to Forum, Libby Davis and Deidre Robson.

All of our fabulous new members of Council and Forum will be formally welcomed in our January meetings - and the work will begin! You can see the full list of Council and Forum members here.

On behalf of all members of NSEAD, thank you again to those Council members who are completing their terms, to those members who will continue to serve on Council and to those members who will be joining us. With so much achieved and so many exciting opportunities ahead of us, we are grateful to you all. I'm really looking forward to working with Council and Forum in 2021.

Teacher training targets and inequity in subject bursaries

The National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) report, The Impact of Covid-19 on Initial Teacher Training, is an analysis of UCAS data outlining teacher training applications and accepted offers across primary and secondary education in England.

Scrutiny of the Report reveals that most humanities and arts subjects have for the first time in many years over recruited with art & music (combined) exceeding their  recruitment target by 139% this year. Whilst this figure is not broken down into specific arts subjects, our concerns about this as the justification for the removal of teacher training bursary for art and design, are borne out. Even more concerning is the lack of bursary for D&T which, in terms of their teacher supply target (TSM), were second only to physics – despite this, physics trainees will receive a 24K bursary (2021-22).
