In brief...

Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas holiday

I just want to say a huge 'well done' to every single NSEAD member. Each of us, in our own ways have made a difference this year - supporting children, young people, our families, colleagues and communities.

And, thank you also for your support for our work and for the hard working NSEAD staff team. We will go quiet for two weeks over the Christmas holiday, but we will be back on the 4th of January to answer your calls, ready for whatever 2021 brings.

We will raise a toast to you, superheroes. May you all manage to find some quiet time for rest and restoration during the seasonal break.

General Secretary

iJADE 2021, Online Conference: Hybrid Spaces, Re-imagining pedagogy, practice and research

The iJADE 2021 Conference, 'Hybrid Spaces' will be hosted online. The Conference, which takes place Friday 26 - Sunday 28 March 2021, will focus on new and adapted conceptual, digital and physical spaces for our practice.

For all of us working in Art and Design education & research, the past few months have challenged us to re-imagine and review our practice. As well as addressing the challenges and barriers that have emerged, we will focus on opportunities for reflection and innovation in our pedagogy. Also welcomed, are research developments and approaches that are showing the potential to help us understand and evaluate new and hybrid pedagogies, modes of engagement and participation.

The Conference will run over three days, each with a different theme:

• Societal, environmental and political impact

• Participation, inclusion and access

• Creativity and wellbeing

Find out more about our Conference and how to book tickets here. There are reduced fees for NSEAD members.

AD's birthday!

Our next issue of AD celebrates 10 years of its publication. The issue (#30, published in January) will be packed with ideas, interviews and articles - many themed around inclusivity and access in art and design education.

Our poster and 'In conversation' celebrates the artist and designer Yinka Ilori – our poster is of Yinka's amazing Colour Palace

The issue includes a wide range of action-based projects and research: for example on gender and inclusion; decolonising and diversifying the art & photography curriculum; and cultural capital in art and science. With many more ideas, provocations and projects to explore, we are really looking forward to sharing this issue with you.

If your membership was due for renewal this term, make sure you renew your subscription online by January 1st to receive this birthday issue and the free poster of Yinka Ilori's work.

The Photography Movement's Show and Tell

Organised by The Photography Movement, Show and Tell uses the therapeutic and creative power of photography to support young people's mental health. Show and Tell's free workshops help students compose, connect and communicate while their nationwide exhibition invites 11-18 year olds to submit an image that expresses ‘How are you feeling’.

Should your learners wish to enter their photos, The Photography Movement have created a special NSEAD FOLDER FOR SUBMISSIONS.

Music education survey

The ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) have published a report which highlights the devastating impact of COVID-19 on music education in schools across the UK.

The key findings include:
Almost 10% of primary and secondary schools are not teaching class music at all.

68% of primary school and 39% of secondary school teachers stated that music provision is being reduced.

Extra-curricular activities are no longer taking place in 72% of primary schools and 66% of secondary schools this academic year.

The ISM said: 'That whilst COVID-19 threatens to further erode music education, it also provides a pivotal moment of reset for education policy. Going forward, it is vital that the Department for Education in England publishes the revised National Plan for Music Education without delay.'

As we move into 2021, NSEAD will be surveying the impact of the pandemic and associated policies changes on art and design education. Please watch out for news of this and how you can take part in our survey.
