In brief...

Happy New Year?

The New Year is barely two weeks old and it has certainly been eventful. Coronavirus continues to dominate and once again the places and spaces where we work have been disrupted and reshaped.

The heroic efforts of everyone working in education to support learners have been really incredible. Everyone is feeling the strain but amidst the darkness the creativity, the kindness and the humour of our community shines through.

My thanks go to you all, and particularly those who are sharing tips, ideas and resources for remote learning and online live lessons.

Artists always respond to the challenge of constraints. My special favourite this week was a post on the NSEAD online Facebook group sharing images of a year 7 task to assemble a colour wheel using household items. To the young artist trying to persuade his dog to stay in the brown section of his colour wheel, thank you - I laughed until I cried!

Keep shining, all of you.

General Secretary NSEAD

You change lives

As 2020 drew to a close we reflected on our community had achieved – nothing could be more clear: Individually and collectively, locally, nationally and internationally, you change lives. Whether online, in classrooms or studios; in regional groups or with organisations; in Zooms or in face-to-face meetings – our subject, our learners are all the better because of your work, ambitions and belief that our subject makes the world a better place.

Every newsletter we will be sharing what our community is doing, or plans to do. If you have any member/community news or plans you'd like to share, please let us know and we'll post regular updates in our newsletters. Please email sophieleach@nsead.org with your updates.

Our first snap-shot of community activity includes:

The Anti-Racist Art Education Action (ARAEA) Group's third meeting took place on Monday. As well as looking at our  strategic plans, the ARAEA Group have been collectively writing anti-racist art education publication and curriculum checklists.

Last Saturday the Special Interest Group for Examinations also met to discuss art and design moderation in the time of COVID. Our collective response will be shared with examination authorities.

On Saturday 23 January Council and Forum will be meeting - Watch this space for an update and news about both meetings!

Also, look out in this newsletter for the NEATEN and NEAAT jointly organised online event. Everyone welcome! (Cost: £5.00 donation to the FareShare food hunger charity).

Summer Exam series

Today, Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson has written to Ofqual asking for 'mini' external exams to help teachers make assessments.

We will keep members of updated as more information is available and the implications for assessment in our subject.

Workplace update

The start of term brought chaos for schools in England, as Government directives for lockdown created uncertainty and difficulty for our members.

Many of you are being required to work on site supporting large numbers of vulnerable and key worker pupils. The percentage of attendance in some schools has been reported as high as 80%.  NSEAD advises all members to insist upon updated risk assessments that address the changing circumstances.

In more news for members in England Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson called on parents to report any concerns about the quality of remote learning provision to Ofsted. NSEAD made our position clear to the DFE - teachers are adapting to an entirely new way of working with little training and sometimes inadequate resources. Ofsted must support teachers at this difficult time, not create unhelpful pressure.

The NSEAD offices remain closed but our team are all working remotely and will respond promptly to any Trade Union queries sent to info@nsead.org
