In brief...

Welcome NSEAD President Liz MacFarlane

On 23 January the NSEAD Council gathered (virtually) for our first meeting of 2021.

This was a special occasion, as Dr Rachel Payne welcomed Liz MacFarlane as NSEAD President 2021-2023. After two years of office Rachel takes her place as immediate Past President, continuing to serve on our Finance and General Purposes committee.

Rachel hands to Liz a legacy of hope and opportunity, having led NSEAD through two eventful years. She has been an inspiring role model, a force for change - and a wonderful support to me personally. Thank you Rachel.

Only the fourth woman to hold the office of NSEAD President since 1928, Liz brings a depth of expertise and subject knowledge, only matched by her commitment to our members and to ensuring that all learners have access to the best that our subject can offer.

Perhaps the retiring President's gift to our incoming President gives us a glimpse of things to come - NSEAD's first Punk President?

We also welcomed six new members to Council, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our governance team. Welcome all, and here's looking forward to achieving great things over the next three years.

Michele Gregson
General Secretary

A curriculum for all

NSEAD is committed to reaching all those who work to bring excellent art, craft and design education and experiences to learners everywhere. By working together we have more impact and make more difference for everyone, wherever and whoever they may be.

It is in this spirit that NSEAD has been working in partnership with the Oak National Academy. Members with primary expertise have worked to produce a key stage 1 and 2 curriculum map, teaching guide and video lessons that are inclusive, accessible and relevant for all primary-aged children. These are free resources that will make a difference now to those who can access them for remote learning, and into the future for teachers across the UK.

NSEAD resources will always come from the heart of our community, with no profit motive. Support for art, craft and design education from a source you can trust - the NSEAD community of expertise.

BERA Survey - Arts Provision in Lockdown: The Effects of COVID-19 Measures on Arts Education in the UK

Dr. Laura Nicklin, Dr. Adam Hart and Jill Lloyd-Jones (M.Ed) are researchers and educators with interests based in arts-based educational research. They co-convene the Arts Based Educational Research Special Interest Group for the British Educational Research Association (BERA)

BERA are conducting a study using an online survey to consider how Arts-based education has been affected by the UK pandemic restrictions.

NSEAD are supporting this work and will be collaborating with BERA on the expansion of the project looking at the longer-term impact of the extended COVID-19 situation.

This initial phase of the research is a scoping phase, focussing on the first UK lockdown between March and July 2020 and closes 1 February. Access the online survey here.

The next phase will consider the further lockdowns and their impact over this extended period of time.

We plan to share the findings of this research with a wide range of organisations that hold the potential to actively affect policy, practice and funding for arts education in the United Kingdom.

Please get involved today and make your voice heard.
