E update

In brief...

Happy New year to our members

This is the first e-bulletin of 2019 and my first as incoming General Secretary. I am delighted to join the NSEAD team after a varied career in art education spanning 25 years. The Society has been with me all the way - a source of guidance, inspiration and expertise. I know that I will continue to draw upon the support of the mighty NSEAD community in all that I do, at this critical time for art and design education.

Publication of Ofsted Phase 3 Curriculum Research

Ofsted have published Phase 3 of their curriculum research. The research has focussed on finding out how Ofsted might inspect aspects of curriculum quality, including whether there are factors that can apply across a broad range of schools.

In this round of research Ofsted reported: ‘It is disappointing to see so few higher scores in technology subjects, humanities and arts.’

This round of research notes that they would like to develop subject-specific indicators for inspection:'We would like to be able to use subject-specific curriculum indicators, because we think that this will be even more powerful in assessing the quality of education.'

The National Governance Association (NGA) has collaborated with Arts Council England to develop an eLearning module for governors and trustees. The module aims to develop understanding of what arts and cultural education means, and how it can improve outcomes in their school/trust.
