Kingston Hospital

Photographers Scott Hortop and Dominic Pote have developed designs for two distinct areas of the Centre which are now installed in the Education Centre of the new Kingston Surgical Centre in Kingston-upon-Thames.

Willis Newson developed an Arts Strategy for Kingston Hospital NHS Trust in April 2007 and then went on to implement the two photography-based commissions.

Bristol Heart Institute

Seven artists have been commissioned to create integrated artworks by United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust (UBHT) for its new flagship heart centre, due to open in Bristol in 2009.

The commissions are part of the Public Art programme developed by Willis Newson for UBHT in collaboration with Laing O’Rourke, Coda Architects, Fira Landscape Architects, staff and patients.

Funding has come from UBHT Charitable Funds Appeal ‘Above & Beyond’.

The artists appointed are:

·   Bristol-based artist Walter Jack, working with Fira, to create landscape enhancements for internal courtyard.

·   Jan Blake and Rob Olins collaborating on a mobile for the 4-storey atrium

·   London design studio Roso working to enhance the Outpatients’ Reception Desk.

·   Marion Brandis working with the porters to create 2D works for the patient lifts

·   Linda Schwab creating wall pieces for visitor lift lobby areas.

Glam Birds

Textile artist Louise Gardiner has been running workshops with residents of Elizabeth Casson House (women’s psychiatric intensive care unit) in Bristol, to create a series of textiles works based on the theme of birds. The final artworks, Glam Birds, are now installed in the communal areas of the unit. Louise also created two works of her own inspired by working with the residents.

The witty works add colour, glamour and a touch of humour to the unit.

“I just wanted to let you know that the pictures have gone down really well. All the ladies have commented on how lovely they look and I have noticed people standing and looking at them. They have really brightened the place up” – Occupational Therapist working alongside Louise in the art room.

Fresh Arts

Willis Newson have been appointed to set up an arts programme for North Bristol NHS Trust, covering Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals.

Called "Fresh Arts" (FREnchay and Southmead Hospitals), the programme aims to improve patient wellbeing and the working lives of staff and to form links between the local community and the Trust through a series of initiatives including:
·   Changing exhibition spaces at both hospitals
·   Setting up an arts committee and consulting with staff about what they would like from an arts programme
·   Piloting a Staff Arts Club with activities trips to the theatre, concerts and art classes
